Imagine waking up one morning and seeing a the headline “Colorado energy company loses 25 years of data after cyberattack while still be rebuilding your network.”

Imagine that company being your company.

Can you envision the panic, the stress, the unknown?

Companies all over are waking up to this reality every day.

This headline was unfortunately Delt-Montrose Electric Association’s reality back in December. The article referenced that the cyberattack took down 90% of their internal systems and 25 year of their historical data to be lost.

CEO of DEMA, Alyssa Clemsen Roberts wrote, "The path to full restoration will take time, and it may result in many of our members receiving back-to-back energy bills.”

The impacts of a cyberattack can have detrimental effects and can take a long time to recover from.

We’ve said it once, we will say it again- it is no longer a matter of if you will be attacked but when.

The importance and value of preparing for crisis continues to drastically increase. As a business owner, it is imperative that you are talking with your IT department about how to protect your business and how to plan for recovery if you are attacked.

Educate your employees on how to be hypervigilant and know what to look for. Have a Disaster Recovery Plan and an Incident Response Plan in place. Talk to your IT department.
