A few weeks ago, you heard from James Harrell about what Big Data is, whether or not you can hide from it, and what you can do to protect yourself. This week we will be following up on this topic and expanding on what is being done with the information collected.

The information being collected is making companies vulnerable. Company information is being compromised and causing data breaches. In order to expand on this topic, we wanted to share two articles of recent data breaches and the invasion of each company’s privacy.

After reading these true stories, it takes the knowledge of your privacy being in danger to a scary reality. As James mentioned, there are small things you can do in order to better mask your data:

  • Do not volunteer any information.  Be careful about taking surveys online and what you sign up for.
  • Do not use membership loyalty cards
  • Disable WIFI and Bluetooth when in public.
  • Install a Pi-hole, which is a DNS based ad blocker on your home network.

With the evolving news on data breaches, we have decided to partner with John Wood from Egerton, McAfee to provide a seminar to help ensure you’re taking all the necessary steps to protect yourself. Join us for lunch Wednesday July 18th, 2018 from 11:30-1:00 to learn what it takes to comply with the latest privacy laws, including HIPAA, CAN-SPAM, and GDPR. With speakers from both technical and legal perspectives, we hope to provide you the opportunity to be sure that you are doing everything necessary and required to protect your data, therefore ensuring your safety.
